Stove Top = Moka Pot

The Moka pot is an excellent way to prepare a strong and delicious cup of coffee. Althoug it is sometimes called a stovetop espresso maker it does not, in fact, make espresso.

different sizes of Moka pots

Method:

  1. Add water to the Moka pot bottom. Fill it up to the indicator line inside the brewer bottom and never cover the valve.
  2. Insert the filter basket into the bottom part.
  3. Add coffee to fill the basket. It should be ground slightly coarser than for espresso and a bit finer than for filter coffee. Feel free to adjust the amount of coffee (e.g. reduce it by a third) if you find the coffee too strong. Make sure you remove any loose grounds from the top edge of the filter basket.
  4. Screw the top onto the pot. Do not over-tighten.
  5. Put the brewer onto the stove, use moderate heat and - if using gas - make sure the handle is not exposed to heat or it will be damaged.
  6. Coffee will at first emerge slowly, then start coming out in a steady stream. When a pot makes a loud gurgling noise, remove it from the heat. Wait a while until there is no more coffee coming and then pour into cups.

Important:

  • use fresh, good quality coffee
  • make sure coffee is ground correctly: it should be ground slightly coarser than for espresso and a bit finer than for a filter coffee; if it is too fine, it will taste bitter
  • remove the pot from the heat at the right time
